The economy of La Gomera has been based on agriculture, both for local consumption and for exportation, until the 60s.
Tiene doble vertiente : autoabastecimiento primero, y exportación por la finalidad de las producciones.
This model of cultivation of the soil, introduced after the colonization of the island, has distributed certain crops according to the location of streams and the humidity of the regions of medium altitude, so that the farm lands are located in the valleys and ravines that have access to water, and in the wet zones which allow the development of dry farming.
This gives rise to an unequal distribution of the population, which is concentrated in the main valleys to the north of the islands; the settling and development of Valle Gran Rey and of Playa Santiago have only occurred during 20th century, and more during the last 10 years with the development of the turism.
The main crops of dry farming have been cereals and pulse (peas, beans, lentils, etc.), potatoes and certain fruits such as grapes. On irrigated land the crops have changed progresively from cane sugar in the XVJ and XVII centuries, to tomatoes, potatoes and crops for local consumption such as corn and fruits, and, in the XX century, bananas.
During the 1960s this model of cultivation was threatened, firstly because of emigration, and later because of the increase in transportation and communication systems and in the tourist industry which nowadays constitute the economic base of La Gomera.
